Doesn't work for all PDFs, such as those that require lengthy downloading via complex mechanisms, including those at Hathitrust. However, it otherwise works superbly, and unlike the new default in the Chrome PDF viewer, it does not perform optical character recognition unasked, or at all. When you download PDFs for archival and research purposes, you don't want arbitrary OCR being done on files, and this plugin does not do that, which is great. You can build with the latest code at the Github repository. If you see a blank page when opening local PDFs, open the extension’s details page in chrome://extensions and enable Allow access to file URLs.

Was amazing, now I can only open old downloads, anytime I try to see new files it just shows me a blank screen where I can't do anything and the icon is gray.

When using "Page Scrolling" mode, you can't use mouse scroll wheel to scroll the page. (Should be performing like pressing PageUp/PageDown on the keyboard) This should be a very basic feature.

love it, but it doesn't directly save to the original file path in the file system. i get that it's a api permissions issue. is there a helium browser fork with pdfjs? i might make my own if i dont find one

The only thing that fixed Chrome's lagging while scrolling on pdfs. Now it I can scroll without it looking like it was running on 15fps. Amazing.

All of the negative reviews seem to be from 2024 and prior. Some versions had glitches, apparently. I have been using the extension for about a year now, and for 2025-2026 and onward, this is my top pick for .PDF viewing, period. They make it so you aren't saddled with the default view imposed by the .PDF file's innate view preferences. Adobe and others do this silly thing where you are defaulted to view settings with an obnoxious space-wasting sidebar, useless AI features, etc. This one is more no-frills, and you get great consistency between .PDF files being loaded. This is particularly friendly for people who are viewing documents with known formatting or structure and want to whisk themselves right to where they need to be. Or, for comparing document versions and spotting changes/updates. Kudos to the devs.

Very good simple PDF viewer, especially since it saves what page you were on since after you close and reopen the tab. However, the UI could be updated.

Very good viewer/filler! This supports XFA as well which is a big deal with ancient govt forms. Much appreciated. Would be helpful to add a form saver/autosaver as well when an XFA form is detected to save the form, in event of a crash. Also a save button, instead of just ctrl-S

After closing and reopening Chrome and reopening last session (ctrl+shift+T), the PDF tabs are gone and become "new tabs".

been struggling with Arabic text pdf for months while it works perfectly in Firefox. this solves my problem and hassle cuz it use Firefox approach

You can have the Firefox PDF reader in Chrome with this extension.

Half of the text on the pdf is in weird characters, needs some work. happens from multiple sources

Very Very useful extension! The default built in PDF viewer sucks! This extension even better than the built one! more smooth, more efficient! It allows Chrome to opens PDF urls automatically.

So, my 5-star review is because after spending almost 2 hours hassling with 3 different options, I found out that this extension, allows me to add text to a pdf file, I can change the color and size of the font - not the font itself but hey, it's free. I am in love with this extension now and highly recommend it for adding text. Hope this helps others decide.

This pdf viewer extention both is super convient for me who hates the default pdf viewer for d2l and it even bypasses crtl + c protection allowing me to with much more ease create flashcards on knowt. Thank You

Great extension, much more convenient than built-in PDF viewer, just one feature request: Please make it possible to open a PDF in the built-in viewer anyway. Just for compatibility reasons. For example, I cannot use other extensions for summarizing the PDF etc. when viewing the PDF in this extension (extensions are not allowed to work on other extensions' pages). Otherwise great!
